Whether you’ve been living in the same house for two months or twenty years, it’s your home. It’s where you hang up your wedding pictures, lay your head down and create memories around the table. But, what about the people next to us, across the street or the ones just twenty feet away? Neighbors can be the biggest pain in your ass or your guardian angel.
I happen to have the perfect combination of crazy and kind. When I first moved into my new home and I met my neighbor, I never though I would gain a new friend. In the beginning, we would wave and chat in our driveway, oh did I mention I share a driveway with two of my neighbors? Yes, it is frustrating. We’d stand there and talk, he tends to get pretty chatty, but he was funny and it seemed we had a lot in common. I was thrilled to talk to someone over the age of three and instantly wanted to swap stories with him. As time went by, he was helping me put my daughter’s bed together and fix things around the house. As a single mom, it was such a breath of fresh air to have a little help. but, I was incredibly perplexed, I mean did he want something from me? Or maybe he just took pity on me because I’m a single mother. The last thing I needed was pity from a neighbor; or maybe it was some game he was playing. If it was a game, I didn’t want to play.
After awhile, we saw less of each other. He became unpredictable and I began to view him in a different way. Even though we don’t always see eye to eye, as most neighbors don’t, most importantly I still wanted him as my friend. To have a friend whose ten steps away is quite incredible. He is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Even when I was stubborn and attempted to refuse his help or was angry with him, he still helped me. He still makes fun of the way I drive and laughs at my endless stories. He watches over our neighborhood to the point where it is almost paranoia, but it is the biggest comfort to any neighbor. I believe that he will go far in life and I hope that I am able to see that. I haven’t known him for very long, but we have been through a lot in such a short amount of time.
Certain people walk into your life for a reason, whether it’s for a glimpse of time or for a lifetime, they still leave a footprint in our lives. I hope that someday I am given the chance to repay him, for he is an exceptional neighbor and has helped me in more ways than he realizes. Ask yourself who are your neighbors? Stop and have a cup of coffee with them, because you never know how much they needed a friendly smile. I am very grateful that we moved into our great neighborhood and to have a friend I never knew I wanted or needed.
